Background

These research notes (Space:ADEY research notes, Hampshire England) are part of my "ADEY Name Study". They were initiated after adopting an orphaned profile of William Adey (1788-1874), who was born in Sopley, Hampshire, England. His biography indicated that he had emigrated to Newfoundland, and died in Hant's Harbour. There seem to have been a large number of ADEYs in Newfoundland since the late 18th century. Indeed there is a place named Adeytown/Adeyton, which is of great interest to anyone involved in local one-name or one-place studies.

Despite having been born in the same locality[?], the connection on WikiTree between William Adey (1788-1874) and my ancestor William Adey (abt.1792-abt.1879)]] is currently 23 degrees, and through Newfoundland, rather than through Hampshire. This seemed to justify the creation of two separate WikiTree free-space pages^[1][2] to collect together research notes on those ADEYs in Hampshire England and those in the Newfoundland Colony, to try and connect them better.

This page contains the Hampshire study research notes, which will initially focus on the Ringwood and Christchurch areas of Hampshire. However the study may need to be extended to cover the rest of Hampshire and the nearby Poole area of Dorset, from where he may have emigrated. Alternatively, he could have emigrated through the nearby small port of Christchurch, or through one of the larger ports like Southampton or Bristol.

Research Method

This is a fairly simple research technique, initiated after discovering (from a YouTube video) that, with the FamilySearch records search for a surname, it is possible use Add Record Options to restrict the records returned. For this method, the option to use the Country or Location (i.e. "England"), the State or Province (i.e "Hampshire") and the Record Type (i.e. Census, Residence and Lists), returns Filtered Results (526). That appears to be one record for each ADEY (or similar) recorded in Hampshire on the eight easily available decadal UK censuses of England, between 1841 & 1911 (the last UK census on FamilySearch), with an average of 65.75 per census.

Search Method 1

Usefully, it may be possible to restrict the Filtered Results to one census year using the Add Life Event > Residence > Residence Year (Range), for example from "1841" to "1841" gives (64). This allows us to create the following crude analysis of census results for ADEYs in Hampshire and other locations in the UK. It is useful to show the counties with the most ADEYs by count, not necessarily by frequency (as the counties have very different overall populations). However, even without repeating the process for all counties, it is clear that there must be a significant element of double counting. The total for this subset of counties far exceeds the total for England, when ideally they should be approximately equal (assuming a fairly low ADEY population in the untabulated counties).

Search Method 2

Further examination of the results revealed that the 1841-1841 date filter was giving spurious results. Therefore I have discovered an alternative technique that may give better results. It involves removing the date range on the main Search panel, and using the "Residence" button that is accessible just under the Filtered Results total. For Berkshire, this offers a choice of two tabs:

• Residence Place options: Africa (9); Irregular (6); UK & Ireland (882); USA (1).
• Residence Year (Range) options:
  • 1800 (515) = 1840 (29); 1850 (52); 1860 (85); 1870 (39); 1880 (136); 1890 (174).
  • 1900 (367) = 1900 (175); 1910 (192).

This appears to make it possible to identify a particular census (assuming 1800 actually means the century and 1840 actually means the decade) total, and Apply that filter to see only those results. For the purposes of this initial analysis table it offers a much quicker, and probably more reliable means of acquiring the data. I have also turned on Show Exact Search in the main Search panel, since I would eventually like to tabulate the totals for each variants in turn. However, it is clear that there are some queer search effects, with the Channel Islands appearing to be considered part of Wales. In addition, there are other occasional odd results, that mean that the arithmetic in columns and rows does not work out exactly.

Initial Conclusions

The ADEY county totals for each decadal census show considerable variance, and it is not yet clear whether this is due to emigration out of the country, migration to other counties, death due to epidemic, an artifact of the FamilySearch website, changes in the spelling of the surname or some other unanticipated census cause. The decadal summary totals for Hampshire revealed that there was a steep ADEY population increase between 1871 and 1881 that was hard to explain. These totals were then repeated for all likely ADEY counties, to establish if it was a consistent pattern. The further analysis revealed a bizarre set of results, that are truly hard to explain and will require detailed examination of the district totals and then key FamilySearch census records.

Possible Family Search Website Bug

Examination of the county results reveals an interesting pattern that may account for the inaccessibility of some census records. In particular, the 1871 search does not seem to return any census results for ADEY family members living in Christchurch. Having completed the analysis row for each county and every census year, a peculiar feature emerged when the table was sorted: Berkshire & Yorkshire totals exactly match for every census year, and likewise for Herefordshire & Herefordshire. Whatever is causing this strange behaviour may also be responsible for the failure to return all census records, and thus only provide only a limited subset total for each county.

Next Stage of Processing

After extracting the country and county totals, it became possible to plan which ADEY census results would be most useful to transcribe into tables, and how to do it. The most useful citation is for the 'head of household', as every other person is recorded with a relationship to the "head". The results need to be tabulated in multiple WikiTables, by transcribing the essential details in an abbreviated format. It could have proved useful to retain the FamilySearch references to individuals, but that would require extra work and the single citation for each family should give easy access to that level of detail. A missing FamilySearch search feature would be to restrict the results returned to one record for each overall 'household'. However, it appears this record must be found manually, by clicking through to the head of household. The Filtered Results provide columns for Name, Events, Relationships, FS Tree¹ & FS Record². The relationships should make it easy to determine who is likely to be the head of household, so avoiding the need to investigate every record returned.

It is probably simplest to prepare one table for each household for each census, containing just the head of household. It will then be easy to use cut and paste, to reorder the tables by year of census, then by first name and age of head (ignoring other forenames and variant spellings), and then the location of dwelling. Thus it will be easy to find a particular family entry in the county, even though names like John, Frederick, William etc. may appear most frequently as the head of household. The relative position of each household in the different decadal tables should not change too frequently between decades, except where caused by death or change of address in the previous decade. From the head of household it will be easy to find the other members and add them to the table.

It is inevitable (given the restrictions of the WikiTree page size) that some columns of information will be omitted from the original tables (e.g. perhaps occupation). If it seems important, the Notes column can be used to make it obvious. The surname of the head of household will appear in the table caption row, and does not need to be repeated for each enumerated person (except where their surname differs from the head of household).

One conclusion, from the earliest transcription effort, was that the 1871 census record search returned are only a partial record set, Unfortunately, all the records for Christchurch, Hampshire (and perhaps for further locations in Hampshire and other counties) were missing in the results returned by the FamilySearch website. A possible next transcription step was then to analyse and transcribe the 1881 census, as the 1861 census also appears to be short of records. This would allow us to determine the extent of the problem, and also help to create a successive set of ADEY census tables, to see how well the family matching process works. Alternatively it may be much quicker to transcribe the 1861 census, as there are many fewer records. To further minimise the expenditure of time, it may be advisable to exclude some distant Hampshire location records from the transcription. To facilitate the transcription process, the individual and family search results for Hampshire were further analysed at the district level.

The previous analysis revealed that the lowest population of ADEYS for Hampshire and England occurred inexplicably in 1871. Therefore, the transcription process continued with that decadal census, to minimise the effort to complete the next stage of the process and perhaps reveal more about the true situation sooner. However, to avoid continuing to transcribe records that may not affect my direct relatives, I then resolved to do a further level of analysis at the district level by separately counting the numbers of individuals and families.
